Panama, 30 sep (EFE) .- The head of HIV / AIDS, UNICEF, Jimmy Kolker, said today in Panama that is "losing the battle" prevention of the disease and that for every two people on treatment in Worldwide, there are five new infections.

In an interview with Efe, Kolker stressed the need for the international community and national programs "work much more closely in preventing new infections, especially in adolescents and young people."
More than 4 million HIV positive people receiving antiretroviral treatment in poor and developing in 2008, representing an increase of 36% over the previous year, said a report submitted by various multilateral organizations.

As children, Kolker said the number of children receiving treatment for the disease is growing even faster than in the total population, indicating that the gap between adult and pediatric treatment is is ever closer.
From 2007 to 2008 the number of children under fifteen who received antiretroviral treatment increased from 198,000 to 275,700, which achieved a 38 per cent coverage.
"One of the objectives of UNICEF is looking at how we can prevent infection reaching young people with knowledge of sexual information in schools, but also observing the behavior that put them at risk, "said Kolker.
In relation to HIV positive pregnant women, 45% received antiretroviral medication to prevent transmission of AIDS to their children, compared with 35% of those treated in 2007.
said Kolker you have to "improve the status of women", noted the differences between boys and girls, as well as the time when young people start to have sex.
"We must ensure that each new generation has the necessary information "he said.
Regarding the role of governments, Kolker said that in the case of Latin America and Caribbean," half of the countries of the region have no national sex education program, "although this is changing" rapidly ".
" Governments are making efforts but it is very difficult for political leaders talk about AIDS and the behaviors that cause HIV in their countries. In some countries, political commitment is one of the missing parts in response to the disease, "he said.
regard to the vaccine that a group of scientists from the U.S. and Thailand found last week and it reduces the risk of getting AIDS, with an effectiveness of 31.2 percent, Kolker admitted that "a major breakthrough, but now you have to understand why chemistry "of these protective effects.
Still, he emphasized:" We must ensure that young people know the causes of HIV. UNICEF's priority in 2010 is prevention, prevention, prevention ".
