It was "a fascist state." That thought, and said that U.S. President Richard Nixon on Chile when Salvador Allende took office in April 1971. Then say that the socialist leader was "a bastard" who had to "kick your ass."
This week, the United States a group of historians and former State Department officials, known as nixontapes.org, published almost 100 pages of transcripts and real audio links to Nixon and other senior officials discussing Chile. The same 3,700 hours of taped conversations that led Nixon to resign over the Watergate budged, hidden voices without makeup and sometimes histrionic President and his top advisers discussing how to "remove" Allende. One of these dialogues could be the first recognition of the role of the CIA in the assassination of General Rene Schneider.
